The 1985 Synod of Bishops presented communion as a key to Vatican II. The meaning of this affirmation is achieved from the resistance it had to overcome and from its integrating flexibility based on the following coordinates: Trinitarian perspective, centrality of the christifidelis, personalist dimension, ecclesiological function of the Eucharist, the local church and the communio ecclesiarum; missionary and ecumenical openness.
