Ecclesiology of Communion. Eclipse or Revival?

Abstract

«The ecclesiology of communion is the central and fundamental idea in the Council documents» (1985 Synod of Bishops). In the Council, however, there is no systematic treatment of the ecclesiology of communion. In what sense can we consider this ecclesiology as the idea “at the core” of the Council’s doctrine? The author offers an answer starting from the biblical, historical and conciliar datum, hoping for the revival of an authentic ecclesiology of communion, conceived and “reconstructed” more theologically, starting from the categories of Mystery, Sacrament and Eucharist, and granting greater weight to pneumatology and the relational perspective.
