Abstract

The present study aims to present the historical development that led to the configuration of the term liturgical spirituality and its use in the current Italian theological landscape. Particular attention will be given to the underlying reality denoted by this terminology, leaving aside the abundant content traditionally associated with it. The study is divided into two sections. The first—and more substantial—section will trace the historical trajectory of the term liturgical spirituality, as well as its less commonly used variant liturgical piety, from its emergence at the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. The primary context of reference will be the Italian one, though occasional references to the broader international landscape will not be excluded. The second, shorter section will offer an evaluative reflection on the term and its characteristics in light of the historical development examined. By offering a previously unpublished historical analysis of the term liturgical spirituality, this article seeks to contribute to the ongoing exploration of the relationship between liturgy and spirituality, shedding light on some of the shadowy areas in which this relationship still remains, at times, underdeveloped.
