In St. John’s writings the Holy Spirit plays an essential role in the Revelation of God. This paper in the first place points to faith as the proper work of the Spirit of Truth, who gives birth to it in the soul through the words of Jesus Christ. Charity, which is the sign of the presence of God in the world, springs from this faith. In a subsequent step, we point out the distinction drawn by the evangelist between two times, that of Christ and that of the Spirit. Upon examination of the promises of the Paraclete, the way in which the Spirit acts as revelator is expounded upon: he does not unveil a new doctrine, different from that of Jesus Christ, but rather reminds the disciples about the words of the Master and instructs them on its meaning. Moreover, the Spirit will be the other Paraclete who, dwelling in the inside of the disciples –herein lays the novelty of his teaching –, will bear witness to the Christ, showing him to be the Son in the glory of the Father, and will interpret, in the light of that mystery, all “the things to come”. The recognition of the role of the Spirit in God’s work of revelation ought to be followed by an enrichment of, not only Fundamental Theology, but also theological work at large.
